Shared Devices: iOS

  • Updated

This article is written for: Zello Work Zello Friends & Family.

Zello's shared devices feature allows multiple network users to utilize a single device and/or log in account without sharing private conversations. It's optimized for shift workers who use Zello at different points throughout the day on a company-administered device.

When this feature is enabled, users will be asked to enter their name and (if configured by the network admin) take a selfie at the start of each shift. The name/photo will be associated with all communications sent by the user until they end their shift, at which point all information and conversations will be cleared from the device.

While this feature allows users to share a singular device, only one user can utilize the device at a time.

Please note: If you're an admin and would like to learn more about enabling shared devices for your network, see this article; this feature must be turned on in the management console for end-user access. If you're an Android end-user, see this article.

Starting Your Shift

When the shared device feature is enabled, a single log in account can be tied to many users. Instead of signing in with your Zello Work network credentials, you’ll sign in with your name at the beginning of a shift.

  1. Open Zello. You'll be directed to a screen titled Start Shift
  2. Enter your name, and if required, take a selfie. Then tap Start.

Please note: The exact configuration of information required at the start of a shift (i.e. profile picture, last name) is controlled by the admin from the management console.

Ending Your Shift

To end your shift:

  1. Tap your user icon to open the Zello menu.
  2. Tap End Shift.

When your shift ends, message history will be cleared from the device. This ensures the next person who signs in for their shift won’t be able to access your private communications.

Impactful Settings

While the shared devices feature always requires a user sign in with their first name, admins can add additional requirements for a last name and/or selfie at sign in.

Profile Picture Requirements

First + Last Name Requirements

If your network admin requires a selfie be taken at the beginning of your shift, you won't be able to successfully sign in without taking the photo.

If you attempt to sign in prior to taking the selfie, you'll receive the following error message:

Network admins may require you to sign in with a first AND last name.

If this configuration is enabled and a user attempts to sign in with just a first name, they'll receive the following error message:

To take a profile picture, tap the camera icon.

Your name will be attached to all communications.

End Shift When Zello is Terminated

From the management console, admins may enable a setting called End Shift When Zello is Terminated.

If this setting is enabled and a user terminates the Zello app—meaning it’s no longer running in either their device's foreground or background—their shift will automatically end.

End users should confirm if this setting is enabled or disabled with their network admin.
