Siyata SD7 (Zello Work)

  • Updated

This article is written for: Zello Work Zello Friends & Family.

The Siyata SD7 is an Android-based, PTT-over-cellular device that meets mission-critical industry standards. Unlike a traditional 2-way radio, the SD7—which utilizes a radio form factor—leverages cellular data plans or WiFi so that connection is clear, robust, and reliable, even in extreme environments. It is a Zello-certified device

Siyata SD7 Features

The Siyata SD7 includes a variety of features beneficial to Zello Work users. These include:

  •
The rotary knob (often referred to as a channel knob) allows users to easily switch between communication streams. Network admins can configure this knob's behavior by following the instructions provided here

Additionally, SD7 users retain the ability to configure channel name announcements. By default, channel names are announced when you turn the hardware knob so that you're aware of who you're speaking to; if desired, this audio can be disabled.

To configure the channel name announcements setting, open the PTT menu on the Siyata. Scroll until you reach the "Channel Announcement" option, then press down on the knob to open the submenu and adjust the setting.

  • Users can press and hold the SOS button to start an emergency. To cancel the emergency, press the button once more.

  • Use the PTT button to transmit messages over Zello.

  • The OLED screen will display the currently selected channel/contact, the currently active channel/contact, and incoming alerts/messages.

  •
This light will flash red when you’re transmitting a message, and green when you’re receiving a message. It's located at the top of the device, next to the rotary knob.

  • SD7 users have a menu option to submit a Zello problem report to our support team

To buy the SD7 or its compatible accessories, visit Siyata's website. For additional help with the SD7, see its user guide

We recommend Zello Work users set up the SD7 using an automated provisioning method, as described below.

Automated Setup and Provisioning

When ordering the SD7, inform Siyata that you’ll be using the device with Zello. They’ll pre-load Zello and the appropriate configuration parameters—such as WiFi SSIDs—to each ordered SD7.

Siyata can also push Zello to already-deployed devices. All updates to the Zello app will be distributed by Siyata.

Zello Work networks should provision users via Zello's CSV user import tool. To do so,  have the following information ready:

Username Username of the Zello Work user you're provisioning.
Device IMEI

If ordering new devices, consider requesting a list of IMEIs from Siyata.

You can also find the IMEI numbers yourself via the device's About menu. To find a device's IMEI number:

  1. Press down on the rotary knob. Then turn the knob until you reach the About menu.
  2. Press down on the rotary knob once more to open the About menu. Then, turn the knob until the IMEI number appears.

Password*

*only required if you're provisioning new users.

User's Zello Work password.

Once your device is provisioned, all IMEI numbers will be erased from Zello's database. To re-provision the same device, you'll need to re-upload the IMEI numbers using the import tool again.

Part 1: Import Users via CSV

The steps below must be completed by a network admin. We'll utilize Zello's import user tool for part one.

  1. Create a CSV file that lists all individuals in your Zello Work network that'll utilize the SD7. Please note that you can provision the SD7 for both existing and new users in your network.

The CSV file should (at a minimum) include:

-Existing users: The username and IMEI number of the device the user will be operating on
-New users: The user's username, password, and device IMEI number

For example, your CSV may look something like the following (sensitive information has been redacted):

A downloadable template for the CSV file is available at the bottom of this article.

  2. Save the file locally.

  3. Sign in to your management console at [yournetworkname].zellowork.com.

  4. From the taskbar, select Users. Then click Import Users

  5. Scroll to the bottom of the console’s import screen and click Choose a file. Select your recently-created CSV file, then once it has uploaded click Proceed.

Please note: If updating existing users, ensure the toggle is switched ON for the "Update existing users with new data from the CSV file" option.

  6. Review the data and confirm it was uploaded as intended. Then click Confirm

6) Upon successful completion of provisioning, Zello will automatically sign in. The currently-selected channel will  be announced, and its name will appear on the OLED screen. This means your device is ready to use.  siyata oled emergency channel.png

Part 3: Configure the rotary knob's expected behavior

The rotary knob can be configured so that it cycles through either your recents, contacts, channels, or indexed contacts. The expected behavior can be established from the management console using these instructions

If you opt for the indexed contacts configuration, the SD7 will automatically connect to the lowest-indexed contact or channel when it is turned on.
